What is HEMA?
HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts. It covers the arts of defense that was practiced in Europe in olden times. For this there are historical sources which describe the principles, terms, used techniques and their execution.
In addition to the written descriptions HEMA also uses contemporary illustrations that were drawn under close guidance by the masters of the day. Together these puzzle pieces help to rebuild the art of historical fencing.
One of the most common misconceptions is that HEMA is the same as historical reinactment or LARP-ing, This is not the case. HEMA is a real martial art, it is not a gamified sport.
The art and skills we learn must be such that they would work in a real world situation. Even if in these days the chances of one having to defend oneself with a longsword are less than slim. It is also about understanding history.
By practicing historical fencing we get to experience a glimpse of what combat and defence may have been like back then.
